The word "tachograph" usually comes up in two situations: on international routes, and after a crash caused by a driver falling asleep at the wheel. There is a lot of confusion around the device — some see it as bureaucratic baggage, others as a cure-all for accidents. Let's see what it is, who really needs it in Uzbekistan, and why in many cases ordinary GPS monitoring fully covers its functions.

What a tachograph is and what it records
A tachograph automatically records speed, mileage and, most importantly, the driver's work-and-rest regime. It continuously logs how many hours a person spent driving without a break.
Modern digital tachographs write data to the driver's personal card and internal memory. These records are hard to falsify — the device is tamper-protected. It is the key tool against fatigue, which causes the most severe crashes on long routes.
Why driver fatigue is a matter of life
In 2024, 351 crashes in Uzbekistan were caused by drivers falling asleep, killing 189 people. A driver who has spent 10–12 hours at the wheel without proper rest is comparable to a drunk one in reaction speed.
The danger is that a person does not notice the moment of falling asleep. A "microsleep" of 3–4 seconds at 90 km/h is 100 metres travelled with eyes closed. On the Tashkent–Bukhara road or the Kamchik pass, that is enough for a catastrophe.
Who needs a tachograph in Uzbekistan
First of all — companies running international transport. When entering countries where AETR rules apply, a working tachograph is mandatory and its readings are checked at the border. A missing or faulty device means fines and cargo delays.
Domestically the requirements are softer, but fatigue control remains critical for any carrier with long routes.
